Ronald Mitchell Brown Slade was born on January 10, 1904. His parents were Alexander Crawford Slade and Hattie (Harriet) F. (Gaetz) Slade. He lived in Musquodoboit Harbour and worked as a labourer. He married Annie May Murley on December 15, 1936 and together they had three children: Diane Glenda, Norma Marie, and Ronald Alexander. He lived in Musquodoboit Harbour all his life and worked as a carpenter and a truck driver for the Department of Highways and Public Works. Ronald passed away circa 1986.
Alexander Crawford Slade was born on August 23, 1869. He was the brother of Charles Duncan Slade, who was born on September 10, 1867. Their parents were Charles Slade and Mary Jane (Crawford) Brown (1827-1909). Mary Jane Crawford had married James D. Brown on Christmas Day, 1845 and together they had eight children. James Brown was killed in a mining accident in Tangier on December 11, 1862. She was remarried to Charles Slade, a thirty year old bachelor, on December 23, 1886 at Musquodoboit Harbour and they had two sons together.
Alexander Crawford Slade married Harriet ‘Hattie’ Florence Gaetz on September 21, 1897. They lived in Musquodoboit Harbour and he was employed as a labourer. Together, he and Hattie had four children: Elliott, Gertrude, Charles, and Ronald. Gertrude married James W. Myers. Alexander died on March 8, 1956 and Hattie died in September, 1959.
Charles ‘Duncan’ Slade, brother of Alexander, married Sarah Agnes Day on Christmas Day, 1891. He lived in Musquodoboit Harbour and was employed as a lumberman and a farmer. Together they had four children: Charles Edward, Sadie Jane, Henry Mott, and James Duncan. Duncan Slade died of tuberculosis on April 17, 1921. Sarah died on September 17, 1911.
Historique de la conservation
Records were donated by Claire and Stephen Donald Hilchie. Stephen is the first grandson of Ron and Annie Slade. His mother is their daughter, Norma (Slade) Hilchie. All of the records came from Ron and Annie’s home in Musquodoboit Harbour, which was built by Ron. They were discovered by Stephen and Claire when they were cleaning out the house when Annie was moved to the Birches seniors’ home. Some of the records were kept at Stephen and Claire’s home in East Chezzetcook until they were donated to the Eastern Shore Archives, while others including the Bible, were kept at the home of Stephen’s parents, Norma and Donald Hilchie. The Bible was given to Claire and Stephen and taken to their home after Claire suggested to Norma and Donald that it be donated to the archives. She then contacted the archives and the records were delivered by Art Keeble in February, 2013.

Fonds consists of birth, marriage, and death records for Slade family members, religious records, records relating to occupations of Ronald Slade, correspondence, photographs, and other records.

Artifacts from the home of Stephen and Claire Hilchie are also in the collection of the Heritage Society under accession numbers 2010.035 and 2013.027.
Clippings that were not related directly to the Slade family were photocopied and placed in the vertical research files.
Conservation
Tintype photographs and vital statistics were cut from the Slade family bible for ease of storage and better preservation. The remainder of the bible was kept as an artifact for use in the Heritage Village, as it did not contain any additional information related to the Slade family. Artifacts were cataloged under the accession number 2010.035 and 2013.027 but are housed separately.
