Custodial history
Sacramental registers from 1800 to 1909 were loaned to the LDS Church (Latter Day Saints or Mormons) in 1971 for microfilming. In 1999, some registers were loaned to the Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management for microfilming (1800-1829; B 1908-1939; M 1857-1942).
Scope and content
Series forms part of St. Mary's Basilica (Halifax, N.S.) fonds and consists of baptism registers (1800-1939); marriage registers (1800-1942); burial registers (1800-1842, 1875-1876, 1925-1969); created by the priests of the parish according to Church law. Whenever a Catholic requested one of these sacraments, the priest would record the details in these bound volumes. Some volumes contain a name index; most have name indexes supplied by the archives. Baptism records include the name of the person being baptized, the names of the parents, place of habitation, date of baptism, date of birth or age at the time of baptism, names of the godparents, and the priest who performed the ceremony. Notes regarding the marital status of the parents or conversion from another faith were also recorded. Marriage records include names of the bride and groom, names of their parents, place of habitation, date of marriage, names of two witnesses and the priest who performed the ceremony. Burial records include the name of the person who died, the date of death or the date of burial, and the name of the priest who performed the ceremony.
