The Saint Mary's University Board of Studies existed between 1957 and 1964 under the Jesuit administration and was similar to the current Academic Senate. During the Jesuit administration, these existed a Senate and a Board of Studies. When the structure of the administration changed, the Board of Governors was created from the original Senate and the Board of Studies became the current Academic Senate. Known persons to have held the position of Chair: C.J. Fischer (1957-1960) and William A. Stewart (1960-1964). Known persons to have held the position of Secretary: Kevin Cleary (1962-1963).

The University Administration developed along these lines: At one time there was Senate and a Board of Studies.
