        History

        Henry Gerald “Gerry” Stairs was born at Halifax in 1904. Following his graduation from Dalhousie University, he worked as a civil engineer. In 1929 he married Freda Winfield. During the Second World War, he served as a lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. A keen yachtsman, he operated for several years as a naval architect and yacht broker. For a time, his brokerage and yacht-building activities were based in Mahone Bay. Stairs later moved to Quebec. In 1962, he self-published The Stairs of Halifax. Stairs died at Montreal in 1964.
