When federal registration ended in 1877 the Marriage Licence Office, under the Financial Secretary of Nova Scotia, acquired the office files.
Scope and content
Series forms part of Nova Scotia Deputy Registrar-General fonds and consists of the correspondence of J.M. Cramp, Thomas McCulloch, and others regarding the collection of vital statistics, 1842-1877; requests for appointments as local registrars and issuers, 1864-1877; incoming correspondence from local registrars to Archibald Scott and Thomas Costley, the Secretaries at the office, 1864-1871; documents regarding the remunerations of local registrars and issuers by the counties, 1867-1868; notes and drafts for reports by Scott and Costley, 1864, 1868, 1870-1875; 1871 census correspondence relating primarily to the census of institutions; descriptions of electoral districts and registration districts; and 1866 quarterly returns of records of deaths for parts of Victoria County (1865), Antigonish County (1876), and Guysborough County (1877). Records date mainly from 1864-1877.
