              Lena Ferguson fonds

              Fonds consists of approximately 137 hours of oral history interviews conducted by Lena Ferguson. Most interviewees were residents of the Eastern Shore region of Halifax County, particularly the Chezzetcook area. Interview topics include genealogy, local industries, occupations, music, shipping, community life, traditions, and folklore. In addition to interviews, the creator recorded school reunions, concerts, weddings, and church anniversaries. Several paper transcripts are included as well as scrapbooks featuring articles written by Lena and other newspaper articles regarding the Chezzetcook area. 2019.014
              Luke Elwood Family Fonds

              Fonds consists of records created and collected by Luke Elwood and the Elwood family (Lawrencetown, Halifax County, Nova Scotia) throughout Luke’s childhood and into early adulthood. These records reflect Luke’s experiences as an elementary student with an intellectual disability whose family challenged his placement in a Special Education class, rather than with his grade-level peers at his neighborhood school. The result was a court-ordered settlement, and Luke was permitted an integrated educational experience (see Biographical Sketch and Notes for more information). In addition to Elwood family-generated records, the fonds also contains collected material related to this landmark legal case, and subsequent scholarship.The records of this fonds extend from 1977, when Luke was born, to 2016.               Part of Helen Jennex fonds
              Sub-series forms part of history and heritage activities series of the Helen Jennex fonds and consists of black-and-white photographs of Eastern Shore locations and people which were collected by Helen Jennex. Included are views of Navy Pool, a lobster hatchery and a skating pond in Jeddore, a lumber mill in Oyster Pond, Salmon River, the Clam Bay schoolhouse, a church, and a sailboat called the Viola G. Hartlin. A photograph of two women identifies them as Mrs. Ervin Myers and Mrs. Byron Mitchell, while other photographs of people, including a wedding photograph, are unidentified. Sub-series also includes some school photographs, including Clam Bay School photographs and a photograph of a newspaper team at Robert Jamison Memorial Consolidated High School. Also included is an unusually composed photograph of Oyster Pond schoolchildren posed on the shoreline, which may have been taken sometime around 1910 by itinerant school photographer Frank Adams, possibly while working under the company name O. B. Stubbs. Some of the photographs are printed onto a card backing, and in some cases are in postcard format. Some photographs are also mounted on cardboard. Also included in the sub-series are two colour photographs and a black-and-white photograph of houses, mounted on a piece of paper. The black-and-white photograph has a family in front, with one member identified as Ella Hill. Accession number 2009.039

              Part of Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds
              Series forms part of the Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds and consists of records related to Alexander ‘Sandy’ and Cora (Harpell) Myers, who was the sister of Grace’s mother. Cora was born on January 26, 1896 in West Jeddore and became a teacher in the early 1900s. She and her husband Sandy (1893-1957) owned the Salmon River House where Grace lived for several years following her retirement. A note found among the records indicates that they were used by Grace to help create the publications produced by the Marine Highway Historical Society. The series includes a photograph of Cora Harpell’s class at Ostrea Lake School in 1915 with the names of the students; a scrapbook containing clippings of songs; stories; and the prize winners of a matrimonial letter contest featuring Cora’s entry, No Fake Gentleman. Also included are various clippings regarding her school in Ostrea Lake; her graduating class from the Provincial Normal College in 1914; as well as handwritten poems and stories. Series also includes the lyrics to the Normal College school song, an application for a teacher’s license in 1912 that was rejected because she was too young, and a teacher’s license issued in 1914, as well as an earlier letter from a friend in1911. Cora died in Musquodoboit Harbour on February 24, 1995 at the age of 99. Series also contains receipts including postal and remitters’ receipts, invoices, ration forms and coupons, product labels, local business letterhead and advertisements, coupons, tax assessments, a tax notice, and enumeration records. Also included is correspondence to Sandy Myers from people coming to Salmon River House, a Christmas card from Arnold Logan, a Guide’s License, and an order form for a vest.               Part of Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds
              Series forms part of the Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds and consists of the minute book of the West Jeddore School trustees from 1944 to 1959, scripts of pageants that may have been performed in schools, and a periodical entitled The Canadian Red Cross Junior, Vol. XXIII, No. 10 dated 1944, which reflects Grace Forsythe’s involvement with the Red Cross Society and her efforts to establish Junior Red Cross Societies in her schools. Series also contains three books created by Grace’s students including a scrapbook of clippings of famous people created by a grade seven class in 1953, a book of stories and drawings entitled Our Story Book created by students in 1961, and a book of stories of rescue created by grade six students in 1962. Also included is a book of lesson plans written by Grace in summer school in Truro in 1942 and an article containing the autobiographical account of Dr. G. G. Sedgewick entitled, A Secret Chapter in the History of Education, which recounts the trials of a new teacher in Oyster Pond in 1900. In addition, series contains a typed copy of Grace Forsythe’s memoirs of her teaching career together with a scrapbook of photographs of students from 1932-1957, illustrating her story, and two certificates recording her completion of grades nine and ten which also list subjects studied and grades received.               Series forms part of the Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds and consists of locally produced publications related to the history of communities on the Eastern Shore. Included in the series are two publications on the history of St. James Church and Jeddore, commemorating the 130th and 150th anniversaries of the St. James congregation, dated 1963 and 1983 respectively. Also included is the revised 1979 edition of a publication written by David E. Stephens, entitled the Story of the Musquodoboit Railway. Series also contains an article written by Margaret Davis entitled, Historical Society answers questions, which discusses how Grace Forsythe and Helen Jennex of the Marine Historical Society helped to answer the question of how Ava and Evangeline Kent passed away in the late1800s. The question was posed after the author discovered their graves in a forgotten graveyard in Pleasant Point. The article also discusses the resources offered by the Society and the publications that they issue. Series also contains a handwritten, one page history of the Red Cross Society in Jeddore. Also included are the histories of Jeddore businesses written by students, c. late 1940s. Businesses mentioned include Nathanial Dooks’ grocery store, the Jeddore post office, B. O. Myers grocery store, and Ralph Bonn’s blacksmith shop. Accession number: 2010.032

              Consists of two handmade and handwritten books entitled, The Owlet and The Work of the Owl, which were created by the students of the Owl’s Head Harbour School. The Owlet was a magazine that the students created for exhibition in Halifax with the help of their teacher. Associated editors of The Owlet are listed as being Una Palmer, Reta Palmer, and Helen Parker. It features poems, horoscopes, essays, a school prophecy, jokes, drawings including the school and its floor plan, a list of pupils, and lists of improvements made to the school in the year 1932-1933. Some of the essays in this book relate to work and life in Owls Head and include an essay on sheep farming and the breed of sheep used. The Work of the Owl is a yearbook created by the students of the Owl’s Head Harbour School. It includes the school yell, school song, songs learned during year, animated map of Owl’s Head, poetry and prose about various topics, horoscopes, humor, and drawings. Accession number 2013.005
