Biographical history

Author and educator W. Terrence Gordon was born in Montreal, Quebec, on 14 October 1942. He studied French, Italian and linguistics at University of Toronto, where he received a BA (1966), MA (1967), and PhD (1972). Gordon began his teaching career at the University of Alberta (1970-1972) before joining Dalhousie as an assistant professor of French in 1972, becoming a full professor in 1987 and being appointed Alexander McLeod Chair in Modern Languages in 1999. He retired in 2002 as a professor emeritus. He was a founding member of the Atlantic Provinces Linguistic Association and helped to launch Italian studies at Dalhousie in 1998. He has written or edited 26 books and over 150 articles, reviews and other papers. Gordon is married to Therese-Celeste Smith-Gordon and has two sons, Perry and Paul-Michael.

Custodial history

Records were donated to the Dalhousie University Archives by Terrence Gordon in seven accessions: (30-00) in November 2000; (2005-039) in November 2005; (2009-028) in September 2009; (2010-019) in September 2010; (2011-024) in June 2011; (2013-045) in June 2013; and (2017-046) in October 2017.

Scope and content

Fonds comprises records related to Terrence Gordon's biography of Marshall McLuhan published in 1997 and includes correspondence with publishers and reviewers; a curriculum vitae; a manuscript draft; newspaper clippings and copies of reviews; and secondary research materials. Other records include the working papers from three books edited by Gordon: McLuhan Unbound, Understanding Media (Critical Edition) and The Classical Trivium: The Place of Thomas Nashe in the Learning of his Time.
