History
Thomas Reuben Black was the son of Josiah and Hannah (Embree) Black and the grandson of Thomas Black, born at Amherst, Nova Scotia. He married Eunice Bent in 1860, daughter of W. W. Bent, who was the representative for the Township in the Provincial Legilature. Eunice and Thomas had five children. Thomas married his second wife, Bertha Clarke, in 1905. Thomas Reuben became a farmer in Amherst and became the Director of Amherst Car Works. He served as a Justice of the Peace for Amherst and served in the Provincial House of Assembly (1884-1890; 1894-1904) and later became a Senator. Early in his career, Thomas abandoned farming and entered construction, building many houses in Amherst, including a group of homes locally known as 'Black's Stone Block'. He was one of the founders of the Provincial Exhibition. Thomas died on 14 September 1905 at Amherst of typhoid fever.
