Biographical history
Burns ‘Austin’ Marks was born July 14, 1898 in Ship Harbour. His parents were Catherine Caroline Quinn and Martin Gay Black Marks of Ship Harbour. Burns Marks died July 14, 1964 in Halifax. He worked as a lumberman but was also a poet and wrote many poems related to local history and residents. He died at Halifax on July 14, 1964 of heart failure and is buried at St. Stephen’s in Ship Harbour.

Scope and content
Item consists of a poem written by Burns Marks about an accident in the Moose River mine in which three Toronto men went into the mine and were trapped by a cave in. Local miners launched a rescue effort and two of the men were saved, however one died in the mine.
