Warren H(oward) G(ladstone) Hirtle, the son of John Daniel and Mary Ann Judith (Strumm) Hirtle, was born at Mahone Bay in 1886. Prior to the First World War, Hirtle launched his career in Mahone Bay as a general merchant, eventually becoming a prominent businessman and citizen of the town. In addition to running his own business, W.H.G. Hirtle, he was president of the Park Cemetery Corporation, chaired the town’s school board, and was active for decades in the town band, serving for a time as its bandmaster. In 1917, Hirtle married Merna Myra Frank. She died in 1960. Warren H.G. Hirtle died at Mahone Bay in 1976.
Historique de la conservation
The records were donated by Anne Ruel in 2008 and 2009 and comprise accessions nos. 2008.07.01 and nos. 09.03.02-51. An accrual, comprising a donation received in 2014 (accession nos. 09.03.24.b and 09.03.05), was found in the museum’s backlog in 2018.
Portée et contenu
Fonds consists of financial records relating to Hirtle’s activities as a merchant as well as his involvement with the Park Cemetery Corporation; a scrapbook compiled by Hirtle documenting the service of Mahone Bay’s First and Second World War military volunteers; a photocopy of Hirtle’s diary for the period from July 19, 1908 to January 25, 1909; and a letter from his brother, Wallace Hirtle.
