William Harold Conrad (1872-1938), Canadian war veteran, and skilled tradesman (machinist), was born June 12, 1872 in Halifax, Nova Scotia to William J. and Sarah Conrad. William H. volunteered with the 66th Regiment “Princess Louise Fusiliers” of the Active Militia of Canada from 1889 to 1915. He served in the South African War (Boer War) from Oct 1899 to Nov 1900 as a private with the 2nd Special Service Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, awarded the Queen’s medal with 3 clasps: Cape Colony, Orange Free State, and Transvaal. He married Henrietta Currie in 1902 and bought a house at 35 Livingston Street, Halifax, NS in 1910. When the Halifax Explosion occurred on December 6, 1917, William H. was in England with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Henrietta and the children all survived but the house was severely damaged. William H. died September 13, 1938 at the age of 66.

Henrietta “Etty” Currie Conrad (1879-1966), housewife and mother, was born January 10, 1879 in Milford, Nova Scotia to George C. and May Currie. She married William H. Conrad on September 15, 1902 in Halifax, and managed their household at 35 Livingston Street. She had 6 children: Arnold (b.ca.1903), Harold Lester (b.1907), Helen Irene (1909-1927), Muriel Erma (1911-1937), Earl Robert (b.1914), and Jean (1921-2006). The family survived the Halifax Explosion but their home was severely damaged. With her husband away, Henrietta had to manage the repairs on her own. The family lived there until 1950, then moved to Ottawa, Ontario. Henrietta died in 1966.

Fonds consists of a letter dated December 8, 1917 written by Pte. William H. Conrad when in England to his wife in Halifax, desperate to learn if she or any of the children are still alive; a signed statement from Pte. Conrad authorizing his wife to make decisions about their house during his absence (May 6, 1918); property deeds (1910, 1912, 1950); certificate of discharge from 66th Regiment (1915); Henrietta’s baptism certificate (1951); their marriage certificate (1902); 3 photographs of Pte. William H. Conrad in uniform and in the field in South Africa (ca.1899); and 1 photograph of their damaged house at 35 Livingston St. (Dec 1917).
