William Nesbitt Blanchard was born in 1867, the son of Edward and Margaret Blanchard. As a young man, William worked on his father's farm at Bible Hill, Nova Scotia. The family were members of the Bible Hill United Church. Blanchard married Margaret Elizabeth Peppard (b. 1873) and the couple had one son, Edward Franklyn (b. 1907).
