The Corning and Chipman Law Firm was founded by Thomas E. Corning and Lewis Chipman, barristers of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia who acted as agents for the London and Lancashire Life Assurance Company. Thomas Corning also served as the Yarmouth County treasurer and Lewis Chipman served as town solicitor. The firm also acted as solicitors to the Imperial Merchant Service Guild at Yarmouth. The Guild's membership was comprised of captains and officers of the merchants marine, and was based in Liverpool, England.

Scope and content
Fonds consists of abstract books which were used to record deed searches performed by the firm. Within the books are notes, letters, maps, sketches, deeds, mortgage papers, and documents, such as abstract titles, related to the deed searches. Included in this fonds are letters related to the firm and several regarding to the men's positions on Yarmouth Town Council.
