Administrative history

The George E. Smith Company, named after its founder, was a hardware company in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Upon Smith's death on February 16, 1916, the company remained in operation.

Custodial history

The history of this collection is unclear. Ms. S. P. Chisholm donated it to the Dalhousie Archives on May 17, 1971, although her connection to George E. Smith Company is unknown.

Scope and content

The George E. Smith Company, named after its founder, was a hardware company in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Upon Smith's death on February 16, 1916, the company remained in operation. The fonds includes the correspondence (including financial transactions) with suppliers and credit reports commissioned by the company concerning their clientele. The collection illuminates the hardships for Canadian companies prior to and during World War I.

Arrangement

The series were naturally formed and only minimal changes have been made. The foreign letters were arranged according to date. It appears that someone attempted to alphabetize the Dun credit reports, but they still needed extensive reorganizing.
