Biographical history
Gerald Porter was born January 3, 1918 to parents Otto and Vera (Garrison) Porter, in Black River, Nova Scotia. Porter was a member of the Acadia Class of 1940 and served with the YMCA War Services during WWII. In 1948, Porter and his business partner, Alfred B. Balcom, established Sanisteam Laundry Limited in Wolfville. In later years, Porter partnered with his son in the same business.
Gerald Porter was involved with many local organizations. He was a long standing member of the Rotary Club of Wolfville, and served as President 1959-1960. He received the Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary in 1985 and 2008. Porter also served as Chairman of the Board of Eastern Kings Memorial Hospital, Treasurer of the Wolfville Scout Association, and served as Warden, Treasurer, and a member of Vestry at St. Johns Anglican Church, Wolfville. He was very active as a member of the Associated Alumni of Acadia University.
Gerald Porter was predeceased by his wife, Mary (Robinson) Porter. Together they had three children. Gerald Porter passed away after a short illness on March 16, 2009.
