The International Education Centre at Saint Mary's University, Halifax, Nova Scotia was established in 1974 and was under the jurisdiction of Continuing Education from 1974 to 1977. The IEC was born out of concern that Canadians wanted to play a more effective role in developing peace and social justice in the world, particularly between North and South (Into the Future, n.d.) It "seeks to increase understanding of global issues and cross-cultural relations so that Nova Scotians and others may participate more effectively - individually and collectively, locally and globally - in building a more equitable, just, and sustainable future. The IEC seeks to work in partnership with groups and organizations committed to international development and anti-racism education" (IEC Vision Statement, Goals, September 1994) The International Education Centre reported to the Vice-President, Academic and Research from 1978 to 1995. The Director was responsible for the anti-racism education program, the Atlantic Region Orientation Centre, China Activities Coordinator, a Community Coordinator, a Community Education Officer, a Community Development Education Program, the Cotton Tree Partnership Linkage Development Project, the Education Coordinator, the Education Program Officer, the International Briefing Centre, Research Office, Resource Centre, School Speakers, a Schools Education Officer, a Schools Program, a Schools Development Education Program, a Speakers Bureau Coordinator, Special Projects Coordinator, and Director and International Development Officer. The centre closed in 1995. Known people to have held the position of director: Denis Healey (1974-1977), Joanie Billard (1977-1978), Bridge Pachai (1978-1979), James Morrison (1979-1984), George Schuyler (1984-1989), and Joy Woolfry (1990-1996).

Fonds consists of annual reports, bibliographies, brochures, course outlines, essay contest results, information on the International Briefing Centre, Irish traditional folk songs, library donations, organizational review, press releases, resource centre facilities, and schools program brochures.

Some papers contain water stains and/or rust stains from staples and paper clips and are stiff and wrinkled from water damage.
