J.D.B Fraser and Sons is a pharmacy in Pictou, Nova Scotia, known in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as both a chemist and druggist. Located at 21 Water Street on what was originally known as the "jail lot," the pharmacy can trace its history to 1828. Fraser was one of the earliest pharmacists in Nova Scotia and is believed to be the first to have made and used chloroform. Three of his sons became pharmacists.
Custodial history
Records were donated to the Dalhousie University Archives in five accessions: (1971-100) in May 1971 by James MacKenna; (1971-167) in December 1971 by Mrs. Clark Long; (1972-058) and (1972-073) acquired in August 1972; and (1999-030) in May 1999 by James Snowden.
Scope and content
Fonds contains the records of druggist J.D.B. Fraser, including receipts and invoices (1894); a ledger used by Fraser and MacKenna (1909); correspondence (1846-1855); the bank book of James A. Fraser (1899-1907); day books; and prescription books (1885-1886).
