Administrative history

The Girl Guide organization was founded in Great Britain in 1909 by the Right Honourable the Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell and was established the same year in Canada, as a branch of the Girl Guides Association of Great Britain. In 1917 the National Council of the Girl Guides Association (Canada) was incorporated by Act of Parliament. The Nova Scotia Council of the Girl Guides Association (Canada) was founded in 1922. In July 1961, by an amendment of the Act of Incorporation, the name of the organization was officially changed to Guides of Canada - Guides du Canada.
Guiding officially came to Nova Scotia in 1911 with the foundation of the 1st Halifax Guide Company. Slowly companies were established across the province. The Nova Scotia Provincial Council was founded in 1921 to oversee provincial operation. The Council was chaired by the first Provincial Commissioner, Mrs. M. Grant. During the early years, the Council met at Government House and was comprised of the following elected officers: the Provincial Commissioner, Deputy-Provincial Commissioner, Provincial Secretary, Provincial Treasurer and District Commissioners.
As the organization grew and new committees were formed, so too did the Provincial Council membership. Presently (1998), the Provincial Council is comprised of the following officers: the Provincial Commissioner, Deputy-Provincial Commissioner, Secretary, Treasurer, Area and Division Commissioners, Commissioners/Chairs of provincial standing committees and other elected members. The Provincial Executive Committee was established in 1922 to conduct business for the Provincial Council in the intervals between Council meetings. The Executive is comprised of the Provincial Commissioner, Treasurer, and ex-officio members from standing committees.
