    Biographical history

Richard James was born in 1796 at Woolwich, England, the son of Alexander James. In 1820 he married Mary Lomax, who died in 1846. They had 8 children. For a time he served in the British Army. In 1834 James settled in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia and in 1835 built a home which is now the James House Museum in Bridgetown. His sister Eliza came to Nova Scotia following Mary's death to live with James and raise the children. James was a Justice of the Peace, jailor and merchant. He died in 1856 at Bridgetown.

    Custodial history

Records were found in the James home during renovations by the Bridgetown and Area Historical Society. They were plastered to a mainfloor door and wall.
