The Archives of Oland and Son Limited consists of records created by Oland and Son Limited and its affiliated companies. Some of the companies changed names after Oland and Son sold its brewing assets to John Labatt Limited. Records for these companies are included as well. Records range from 1867 to 1989, but were predominiately created between 1950 and 1971. The Archives of Oland and Son and Affiliated Companies include a wide variety of materials, including administrative records, financial records, correspondence, photographs, advertising and marketing materials, beer production files, sales records, and legal documents. Administrative records typically include meeting minutes, annual reports, memorandums, surveys, and studies or reports on various aspects of the brewing industry and the breweries operated by Oland and Son. Beer production files typically include brewing books, yeast log books, fermentation schedules, production reports, and other records that document the beer production process. The Archives contains a large amount of correspondence between Oland and Son and its affiliated companies and various businesses, government agencies, associations, and individuals from across the Maritimes and around the world. Financial records typically include financial statements, cost reports, comparative statements, general ledgers, valuations, audit reports, and other records documenting the financial position of the various companies. Extensive advertising and marketing files exist, including advertising contracts and schedules, proofs and sketchs, reports and proposals, and budgets. The Archives also has extensive sales records documenting the sale of beer across the Maritimes, Quebec, and parts of the United States and the Caribbean. The Archives also contains hundreds of photographs and blueprints of the factories, factory equipment, and the Bluenose II. Materials are in English, French, German, and Czech. Fonds consists of collected research on the history of the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s from its earliest records, with a special focus on gold mining and Goldenville, Nova Scotia, as well as the personal archives of the Lomas family recording their decades of public service alongside historical material gathered from their families and the community in Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia. The historical research begins with the earliest inhabitants of the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s, and continues with the arrival of Europeans, reports on the economic development of the area, essays on regional occupations, churches, charitable organizations, schools, government, transportation, communications, energy, banking, health care, recreation, and the war effort in two world wars. It collects research on the communities of Ecum Secum, Marie Joseph, New Chester, The Liscombs, Spanish Ship Bay, Sherbrooke, Sonora, Wine Harbour, Indian Harbour, Port Hilford, Port Bickerton, Harpelville, Fisherman’s Harbour, Jordanville, Stillwater, Waternish, Melrose, Aspen, The Forks, Denver, Glenelg, Smithfield, the Caledonias, Goshen, Argyle, Garden of Eden and the St. Mary’s River. Goldenville, Nova Scotia, is covered extensively with maps, photographs, census reports and other papers. Many histories of the region are collected in this fond, including unpublished memoirs. Papers from the Prince Henry Sinclair Society, St. Mary’s Historical Society, West River Station Restoration Committee, St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Sherbrooke Library, Sherbrooke Village, Canso Historical Society, and the Liberal Party of Nova Scotia are also in this fonds, alongside a generous collection of material generated by the Lomas family themselves. There are records from the foreign service of Alton Anderson Lomas in the United States, Mexico, Belgium, and China, as well as his political work in Ontario and Nova Scotia. There is also an extensive record of the community service done by Al and Aleah Lomas, notably her work as librarian at the Sherbrooke Library, and several awards for volunteer service. In addition to the Lomas family material, this fonds holds genealogy research for many local families, notably the McKean/McKeen, Anderson, Henderson, Landesberg, and McLane families. There are photographs of local people and landscapes dating back to the 1870 opening of the first bridge over the St. Mary’s River at Sherbrooke, up to the 2005 wedding reception of Aleah Lomas Anderson and Murray Anderson, with an emphasis on the Anderson, Lomas, Palmer, and MacDonald families. The fonds also has audio and video recordings of interviews, speeches, and brief reports discussing topics of interest to the eastern shore of Nova Scotia. Fonds consists of records regarding imX’s corporate operations, productions, and other projects between 1985 and 2008. Corporate operations include imX Communications and its subsidiary companies: ImageX, Helix Animation, and North/Northeast Ventures. Film productions include theatrical full-length or short films, including documentaries. Television productions include made-for-television movies and documentaries, stand-alone productions, and series. Animated productions include feature length, television series, and shorts. This fonds comprises ninety-four series which are arranged alphabetically by the name of the corporate entity, production, and project. Textual files contain a wide range of documents including scripts, call sheets and daily production reports, funding applications, cast and crew employment contracts, notes on location scouting, co-production agreements, marketing plans, budgets, music cue sheets, insurance coverage, and correspondence. Electronic mail (4.57 GB) downloaded from the e-mail server at imX corporate headquarters in Halifax contains 32,134 individual messages in 1,054 folders covering all aspects of corporate operations and business transactions. There are also 23,368 electronic files (15.6GB) that support the activities of imX, imageX, and Helix Animation documents in use between 1990 and 2008. Together with the text files, they represent a complete record of the activities of imX Communications and its affiliates. Most corporate records have been retained in order to provide a full picture of what it is like to run a film production company in Nova Scotia. In addition, the records for three feature film productions, The Divine Ryans, Margaret’s Museum, and Love and Death on Long Island, have also been fully retained. 134 linear feet of textual material was not retained.
