Shipping Reference Collection

The Shipping Reference Collection incorporates virtually all miscellanous shipping records and reference material that were accessioned as part of "MS-8-Ref." A large portion of the collection consists of reference files on various vessels and shipping lines. A card-catalogue index known as "Master and Mates" provides references to microfilmed vessel papers, trade records, registers, and other related materials. The collection also includes photographs, slides, and published materials such as the Lloyd's Register of Ships. Fonds consists of approximately 137 hours of oral history interviews conducted by Lena Ferguson. Most interviewees were residents of the Eastern Shore region of Halifax County, particularly the Chezzetcook area. Interview topics include genealogy, local industries, occupations, music, shipping, community life, traditions, and folklore. In addition to interviews, the creator recorded school reunions, concerts, weddings, and church anniversaries. Several paper transcripts are included as well as scrapbooks featuring articles written by Lena and other newspaper articles regarding the Chezzetcook area. 2019.014

Fonds consists of one hardbound journal which records the shipwrecks - Lily of the Valley, Seaman's Bride, Dashaway, I & W Pitts, Resident and Commissioner reported off the coast of Antigonish County, Nova Scotia. It lists the cargo which was lost and other items that were to be auctioned off. Reports on wrecks were filed so that insurance claims could be settled and salvage operations could begin. The Notary Public was responsible for securing the release of cargo for salvage.

The accession contains index cards originally stored in 10 small plastic boxes and 1 long cardboard box. The cards were created by Trevor Bebb and contain entries from various shipping registers. The cards describe vessels, captains, and sailors. The accession also contains two oversized ledgers from the nineteenth century and several manuscript sheets of poetry. Spry Bay store ledger and scrapbook

The item was originally a ledger from a store in Spry Bay c. 1896, in which accounts and retail transactions were recorded. The store may have been owned by the Leslie family. Later, around the time of the First World War, Bessie (Gerrard) Hilchey began using the ledger as a scrapbook and pasting newspaper clippings onto the pages, thereby covering most of the original ledger information. The scrapbook dates between about 1905 to 1953 and includes poems, newspaper articles, obituaries, marriage and engagement notices, graduation notices, clippings related to World War I and some small clippings about World War II, articles about horticulture, etiquette, single women and wives, bachelors and husbands, society columns, and articles about notable disasters or accidents including shipwrecks and fires. There are also handwritten notes mainly referring to the weather on the inside of the first page. These notes also record dates that buildings were constructed as well as the Halifax Explosion. Pages 195 to 285 have not been scrapbooked and remain purely accounts of retail transactions made at the store in Spry Bay, including the names of customers. Accession number: 2013.011
