Lockeport Historical Collection

Collection contains documents relating to the mercantile and shipping activities of William McMillan, McMillan was active in the business between 1893 and the early 1930's. Records include receipts, invoices and other material from other merchants he purchased or sold to, correspondence regarding the shipping of those goods, papers regarding the vessels he owned or contracted to sail the material to different parts of the world and correspondence from individuals who ran the ships. Also included are telegram notices, personal correspondence and other material. This collection also contains material from the Locke Family, the Harding Family, all in Lockeport, Nova Scotia. It also contains documents from different individuals in the town of Lockeport. Part of the material included in this collection is the research of Trevor Bebb. He was working on the shipping history of Lockeport and the surrounding areas and as such has collected a great deal of material. Included in his papers are research notes, photocopies of shipping and customs records, diaries and logs, and printed material. MS-4-177

This history is a discrete item and was written by Clare Palmer in 1938 when she was about thirteen years old. It was likely part of a school assignment as there appears to be a comment written by the teacher on the last page. In his or her comment the teacher praises the value of the information provided by Clare and suggests that she donate it to the public archives. This handwritten, handmade history book is based on information provided by Mr. George Marks, Mrs. Bruce Marks, and Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Marks, whose contribution is acknowledged by Clare at the outset of her work. Her history includes chapters on the first settlers, the growth of the settlement, Ship Harbour industries, schools, transportation, churches, food, clothing, and lights; amusements, public buildings, prominent people, nature, and a final chapter that discusses Nichol Island and Wolfe Point as well as the origin of the name “Ship Harbour.” The book includes three hand drawn maps: one of Ship Harbour that features dwellings, G. L Monk’s store and mill, the J. L. factory, and the chapel; a second map depicting early roads in the area in 1863 as well as a ferry; and one small map of Nichol Island. The second last page also includes a photograph of the lighthouse at Wolfe Point on Nichol Island, which is were Clare lived with her family in the lightkeeper’s house. The book also includes two newspaper clippings, one about Daniel Weeks and one about the 50th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Addington Marks which includes a picture. Accession number: 2013.013

John McLean & Sons fonds

Fonds consists of legal documents, correspondence, notes, blueprints, and photographs that primarily document the shipbuilding activities of the John McLean & Sons shipyard in Mahone Bay. The photographs feature annotations (on the front or back of mounts) that identify vessels, members of the McLean family, some shipyard workers, and other subjects, including some early views of Mahone Bay. Among the vessels depicted are the schooners Crofton U. McLeod, H.H. MacIntosh, and John W. Miller. There is also a photograph of the CPR steamer Mount Temple aground on West Ironbound Island in 1907. The blueprints and related textual records document vessels built by both John MacLean and Sons and the Mahone Bay Shipbuilding Company. The legal documents pertain to real-estate issues. An accrual processed in 2020 comprises a group of 29 photographs (mostly tintypes) and a group of 70 glass negatives. The tintypes and related photographs date from the c. 1861-1890 period and consist mostly of portraits of John McLean’s wife and children. The glass negatives date from c.1891 -1895 and consist of street views of houses, portraits of people (including two portraits of John McLean), and one military photo. These glass negatives have been attributed to John McLean who was best known as a local shipbuilder but self-identified as a photographer in the 1871 census and on his daughter’s marriage record in 1879. It is possible that McLean was also responsible for the tintypes. MBMS-5
