Fonds consists of one audio cassette, featuring Vincent Young singing folk songs from the West Petpeswick area at a kitchen party in West Petpeswick. Songs include Rango’s Boots and The Bear Song. Rango’s Boots is about the very large boots worn by George William “Rango” Bayers while The Bear Song was from the late 1800s and referred to a bear that tormented livestock on the west side of Petpeswick Harbour. Also contains copies of transcripts of the lyrics of both songs including information about Rango Bayers. George William “Rango” Bayers was born in 1829 and died 1916 in West Petpeswick. His parents were Nutting Bayers and Marie (Warner) Bayers. He was married to Elizabeth Ann (Eliza) Clerge c. 1854. They had at least two children; Annie Belle (Annabel) Bayers (m. Dennis Aisley Greenough) and Henry William (Harry) Bayers (b. 1855). Rango was a large, distinguished looking man. He worked as a farmer and is thought to have owned a substantial amount of property, including several islands in Petpeswick Harbour and a gold or silver mine. His daughter, Annie Belle (Annabel) provided the lyrics and melody to the song, Farewell to Nova Scotia, to Helen Creighton who recorded it in 1933. The banjo player in the sound recording accompanying Vincent Young may have been Marshall Bayers. Accession number 2013.001

Collection consists of audio-visual materials relating to the history, culture, and natural landscape of the St. Mary's River region, as well as the activities of Sherbrooke Village Restoration. Most audio-visual materials in the collection were recorded as part of the research and programming activities of Sherbrooke Village Restoration and its staff members in the 1980s and 1990s, including oral history interviews, public presentations at Sherbrooke Village as part of staff training or other programming activities, and broadcast, educational, and/or promotional media relating to the Sherbrooke area or Sherbrooke Village Restoration.

Fonds consists of collected research on the history of the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s from its earliest records, with a special focus on gold mining and Goldenville, Nova Scotia, as well as the personal archives of the Lomas family recording their decades of public service alongside historical material gathered from their families and the community in Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia. The historical research begins with the earliest inhabitants of the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s, and continues with the arrival of Europeans, reports on the economic development of the area, essays on regional occupations, churches, charitable organizations, schools, government, transportation, communications, energy, banking, health care, recreation, and the war effort in two world wars. It collects research on the communities of Ecum Secum, Marie Joseph, New Chester, The Liscombs, Spanish Ship Bay, Sherbrooke, Sonora, Wine Harbour, Indian Harbour, Port Hilford, Port Bickerton, Harpelville, Fisherman’s Harbour, Jordanville, Stillwater, Waternish, Melrose, Aspen, The Forks, Denver, Glenelg, Smithfield, the Caledonias, Goshen, Argyle, Garden of Eden and the St. Mary’s River. Goldenville, Nova Scotia, is covered extensively with maps, photographs, census reports and other papers. Many histories of the region are collected in this fond, including unpublished memoirs. Papers from the Prince Henry Sinclair Society, St. Mary’s Historical Society, West River Station Restoration Committee, St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Sherbrooke Library, Sherbrooke Village, Canso Historical Society, and the Liberal Party of Nova Scotia are also in this fonds, alongside a generous collection of material generated by the Lomas family themselves. There are records from the foreign service of Alton Anderson Lomas in the United States, Mexico, Belgium, and China, as well as his political work in Ontario and Nova Scotia. There is also an extensive record of the community service done by Al and Aleah Lomas, notably her work as librarian at the Sherbrooke Library, and several awards for volunteer service. In addition to the Lomas family material, this fonds holds genealogy research for many local families, notably the McKean/McKeen, Anderson, Henderson, Landesberg, and McLane families. There are photographs of local people and landscapes dating back to the 1870 opening of the first bridge over the St. Mary’s River at Sherbrooke, up to the 2005 wedding reception of Aleah Lomas Anderson and Murray Anderson, with an emphasis on the Anderson, Lomas, Palmer, and MacDonald families. The fonds also has audio and video recordings of interviews, speeches, and brief reports discussing topics of interest to the eastern shore of Nova Scotia. The Fisherman’s Life Museum is located in Oyster Pond and depicts the home and lifestyle of a local inshore fisherman in the early 1900s. It was originally the home of Ervine and Ethelda Myers and their family. It is part of the Nova Scotia Museum. The Fisherman’s Life Museum Oral History Project began in the summer of 1981 and was led by Deborah Trask. Interviews were conducted in July and August of that year and transcriptions were completed over the following six years. The primary motive for conducting the interviews was to gather information that would assist with interpretive program development for the new Fisherman's Life museum and to ensure the accuracy of the museum’s furnishings. The interviews were conducted with local residents who had substantial knowledge of the patterns of life in the area and would enable the museum to collect a wealth of oral history related to the Ervine Myers house, the museum outbuildings and site, patterns of land usage, work, and life in the community. Collection consists of transcripts and in some cases, audio cassette recordings of interviews with various residents of the Jeddore Oyster Pond area including Olive (Parker) Robbins, Percy Perry, Garth M. Hosking, Cecil F. Mitchell, and Jeannette A. (Mitchell) Hartlen. The interviews contain information regarding local history, the life of inshore fishermen in the area in the late 1800s to early 1900s, and information regarding the buildings and site that are now part of the Fisherman’s Life Museum. Collection also includes transcripts of the interviews. Accession number: 2013.064
