              Part of Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds
              Series forms part of the Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds and consists of locally produced publications related to the history of communities on the Eastern Shore. Included in the series are two publications on the history of St. James Church and Jeddore, commemorating the 130th and 150th anniversaries of the St. James congregation, dated 1963 and 1983 respectively. Also included is the revised 1979 edition of a publication written by David E. Stephens, entitled the Story of the Musquodoboit Railway. Series also contains an article written by Margaret Davis entitled, Historical Society answers questions, which discusses how Grace Forsythe and Helen Jennex of the Marine Historical Society helped to answer the question of how Ava and Evangeline Kent passed away in the late1800s. The question was posed after the author discovered their graves in a forgotten graveyard in Pleasant Point. The article also discusses the resources offered by the Society and the publications that they issue. Series also contains a handwritten, one page history of the Red Cross Society in Jeddore. Also included are the histories of Jeddore businesses written by students, c. late 1940s. Businesses mentioned include Nathanial Dooks’ grocery store, the Jeddore post office, B. O. Myers grocery store, and Ralph Bonn’s blacksmith shop. Accession number: 2010.032

              Part of William Ansell Gaetz family fonds
              Series forms part of the William Ansell Gaetz family fonds and consists of records related to Mr. Gaetz’s service during the First World War, correspondence with soldiers during World War II, and Mrs. Gaetz’s involvement with the Red Cross Society in 1940. William Gaetz enlisted in the military in 1916 and served as a private with the 246th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He served in England, France, and Belgium and with [the Canadian Forestry Corps (CFC)], sustaining an injury during his service for which he received a pension for a short period of time following his discharge from the army in April of 1919. His military records include a leave cheque and two leave passes, an attendance certificate for bayonet fighting and physical training, an army form to certify that he had the proper equipment, clothing, and necessaries prior to embarking for service overseas; a ration booklet, pension related papers, a dispersal certificate, and a discharge certificate. The correspondence from WWII consists of one letter to Mr. Gaetz dated March 4, 1941 from a soldier named Norman in England who came from the Eastern Shore as well as a letter to Mr. Gaetz and family dated February 10, 1941, Epsom, England, from a soldier named Sam who was from Musquodoboit Harbour. The series also includes a Red Cross Society National War Appeal and pin belonging to Josephine Gaetz from 1940.

              Part of Helene Read fonds
              Series forms part of the Helene Read fonds and consists of records pertaining to organizations and committees in which Helene Read was presumably involved. These include the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service, meeting minutes of the Municipal Planning Strategy Districts 10 & 11 Public Participation Committee, the Mining Society of Nova Scotia, and other organizations. Records consist of correspondence, handbooks, memorandums, invoices, schedules, meeting minutes, notices, and other materials.

              Consists of two handmade and handwritten books entitled, The Owlet and The Work of the Owl, which were created by the students of the Owl’s Head Harbour School. The Owlet was a magazine that the students created for exhibition in Halifax with the help of their teacher. Associated editors of The Owlet are listed as being Una Palmer, Reta Palmer, and Helen Parker. It features poems, horoscopes, essays, a school prophecy, jokes, drawings including the school and its floor plan, a list of pupils, and lists of improvements made to the school in the year 1932-1933. Some of the essays in this book relate to work and life in Owls Head and include an essay on sheep farming and the breed of sheep used. The Work of the Owl is a yearbook created by the students of the Owl’s Head Harbour School. It includes the school yell, school song, songs learned during year, animated map of Owl’s Head, poetry and prose about various topics, horoscopes, humor, and drawings. Accession number 2013.005

              Series consists of publications produced by the Marine Highway Historical Society between 1977 and 1985. Grace Forsythe was the treasurer of the Marine Highway Historical Society, contributed to the production of these publications, and in later issues served as editor along with Helen Jennex. Publications in this series include two volumes of verses compiled by Reuben George, an unbound copy of Reminiscence (1976) given to Ada Williams by Helen Jennex, Rambling Memories (1977), Forget- Me-Not Reflections (1978), Backward Glances (1979), Children’s Thoughts (1980), Around the Harbour (1981 with 1983,1988 updates), One Day at a Time (1982), Along the Shore (1982), Eight Years of Marine Whispers (1983), The Gull’s Cry (1984), Bygone Snippets (1984) and Marine Whispers (1985). Series also contains a preliminary copy of a book entitled Memory Verses (1984).Also included are loose pages of publication layouts featuring collages of advertisements, letterheads, and other memorabilia.
